4th Qtr Counselor in the Spotlight
Jan Summers
Jan Summers was a classroom teacher and ESE teacher for 19 years before she found her passion as a school counselor. She earned her undergraduate degree from Jacksonville University and her master’s in counseling from University of North Florida. She is serving in her 16th year as a counselor.
In 2006, Jan received the prestigious RAMP award for her work at Carter G. Woodson Elementary. She is now the counselor at Love Grove Elementary and has been there eight years. Her career as a counselor fulfills her desire to collaborate with teachers, students, and parents to help students achieve their highest potential.
Some of Jan’s highlights at Love Grove have been coordinating the “Blessings in a Backpack” program which provides food for the weekend to about 175 families at Love Grove. She also partners with organizations and churches to provide extra food for the weekend to families in need. The Florida Baptist Children’s Home/One More Child has provided food to families for several years. They also provide Christmas toys and summer resources for about 15 families, many of whom are doubled-up.
Jan also enjoys putting dents in her attendance data with daily check-ins to combat tardiness and absenteeism. She facilitated many conversations with parents of her Duval Home Room students to encourage them to return to the brick-and-mortar setting. Not stopping there, she provides classroom lessons for students at school and on-line. She facilitates several small groups targeting needs in her school for different grade levels, ESOL, mindfulness, and to encourage good behavior.
Thank you, Jan for being an awesome Duval County School Counselor! You represent us well!

Quarter Two 2020 - 2021
Ms. Deirdre Clayton
Deirdre Clayton is described by her coworkers as someone who is eager to learn, relates well to parents and students, and is amazing to work with. After earning a bachelor’s degree, Ms. Clayton worked at Community First Credit Union as an underwriter and volunteered to teach financial literacy in the high schools. At another event, Ms. Clayton spoke with Ms. Josephine Jackson, and was encouraged by her to seek her master’s degree. “Just Do It!” And she did!
Ms. Clayton graduated from Webster University and did her internship at A. Philip Randolph. Her first counseling job was at Jean Ribault Middle School. She was there for seven years and loved it! This year she moved into a new position at APR as a high school counselor and she is loving it even more! With not even four months into the school year, she has organized the Vision Van, a blood drive and two military branch recruiters for the students.
We love your enthusiasm for school counseling Ms. Clayton! Thank you for representing all school counselors well in Duval County!

Congratulations to Seanta Jones, our first Duval County School Counselor in the Spotlight!
Seanta has been a school counselor for ten years at Ribault Middle School! According to Ms. Bradford who works at the school, Ms. Jones knows the families inside and out. She knows her students by name and can also tell you family histories. Not only is she an advocate for the students but she also serves as a mentor for new counselors.
Seanta is fully involved at her school. She serves as the Chair of the Shared Decision Making Team and is a member of the Sunshine Committee and Homecoming Committee.
Talk about going above and beyond, Seanta helps to provide uniforms for her students by shopping at the Goodwill store, purchasing uniforms, and even takes them home to be washed!
Some special programs Ms. Jones is involved with includes a variety of stakeholders and community partners. They include: Achievers for Life, Communities in Schools, Modern Free Masonic Group who provides turkeys at Thanksgiving, shoes at Christmas, and gift cards. She also partners with the United Way and Full Service Schools to provide eyeglasses free of charge to students in need.
“I just do the job with a caring heart and encourage them. They are kids with social-economic challenges through no fault of their own.”
Thank you for a heart of giving and caring, Ms. Jones. You make all counselors in Duval County proud!
